Eco-Spirituality and Hava Nagila: The Movie
February 24, 2017
Thomas Berry's 'New Story' of the Earth and our place in it, the not-so-tortured true story of early Christian martyrdom, and Hava Nagila: The Movie.
The New Story of the Universe February 24, 2017
When it comes to caring about the environment, we don’t have an apathy problem--we have a story problem. The narrative we tell ourselves about where we come from is often disconnected from the story of plants, animals and oceans. And it’s removed from the grand narrative of the cosmos: the planets, the stars and space.

There’s a more compelling way of understanding our origins. It’s a story that goes all the way back to the beginning, some 14 billion years ago when everything we see around us erupted from a brilliant big bang. Some, like the late theologian Thomas Berry, call it “The New Story." From March 2013.

The Not-So-Bloody True Story of Early Christian Martyrdom February 24, 2017
It’s a story that’s often been told: in the first 300 years of Christianity, the Christian faithful were beheaded, burned at the stake, or thrown to the lions in the Coliseum. But this tale of persecution turns out to be mostly false. It's a myth that's been kept alive to inspire the faithful, and has justified Christian violence from the Crusades through modern times. From March 2013.

Pictured: St. Stephen, the first Christian martyr. According to the Book of Acts, he was  stoned to death by an angry mob.

Hava Nagila: The Movie February 24, 2017
You might think of it as an old anonymous folk song, but its beginnings go back not much more than a century. Hava Nagila, Hebrew for "Let Us Rejoice," began as a Hassidic nigun, or wordless melody. It was sung in nineteenth-century Ukraine, and then made its way to pre-state Israel, then to suburban America. Like the Jewish history itself, it contains both great joy and deep sorrow. From March 2013.

Saying 'I Do' in an Interfaith Relationship February 19, 2017
Christmas tree or Menorah? Honey baked ham or brisket? CCD or Hebrew School? For the nearly 40 percent of Americans in mixed-religion marriages, (many of which are Catholic-Jewish,) what to do about holidays and religious school are just a few of the worries that often come up. Interfaith marriage counselor Mary Helen Rosenbaum says, fear not: there are practical ways to make it work over the long haul. We’re also joined by two interfaith couples who share their own experience. From February 2008.

Victims of War and Islamophobia: Europe's Refugee Crisis
February 10, 2017
In 2015, more than a million migrants and refugees entered Europe. Today, as the US debates a travel ban, we look back at our 2015 show from the beginning of the crisis.
Christians Only: Europe's Anxiety About Muslim Refugees February 10, 2017
In 2015, refugees from the Middle East and Africa were streaming into Europe, looking for safety and some semblance of hope. Many of them were Muslim, and many were greeted by Islamophobia. This interview was originally broadcast as the refugee crisis first took hold. First, we hear from a Syrian refugee about his new home at a refugee camp in the Netherlands. Then, we analyze the situation with a journalist and a scholar of Islam.

Songs, Chants, and Prayers from Ancient Syria February 10, 2017
The news out of Syria is grim. But this week, we're going to recall the Syria that came before all that. Historically, it’s been a deeply spiritual country, full of Sufi Muslims and Orthodox Christians, whose songs and prayers represent some of the most beautiful examples of religious music in the world. Jason Hamacher recorded some of these sounds, just months before the civil war erupted. From October 2014.

The Whiteness of Jesus, The Dead Sea Scrolls Go Digital, and More
February 03, 2017
How depictions of a fair-skinned Jesus linked whiteness with godliness, and the Dead Sea Scrolls as you've never seen them before.
Warner Sallman 1941
Jesus, Whiteness and Power February 03, 2017
Most Americans imagine Jesus as a pale-skinned man with delicate features and long, flowing hair. That image, which many people have come to think of as a timeless classic, was actually painted in 1941 by Warner Sallman. Edward Blum explains how this and other depictions of a white Jesus have linked whiteness with godliness – and complicated race relations for generations of Americans. Originally aired in 2013.

A Very Modern Home for Some Very Old Manuscripts February 03, 2017
The legend goes something like this: in 1946, a Bedouin boy went searching for a lost goat and stumbled into a cave, where he found ancient, tattered pieces of parchment. It turns out they were part of a treasure trove of manuscripts containing the Hebrew Bible and other Jewish documents, all penned some 2000 years ago.

For the last several decades, the Dead Sea Scrolls have lived very sheltered lives, but now anyone with an Internet connection can view them in stunning, hi-resolution detail. Originally aired in 2013.

Jodi Magness, professor at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Rep. Keith Ellison, America's First Muslim Congressman
January 26, 2017
In 2006, Rep. Keith Ellison became the first Muslim elected to Congress. Now he's seeking to lead the opposition to President Trump as chair of the Democratic Party.
Don't Call Him 'The Muslim Congressman' - He Prefers 'Keith' January 26, 2017
Representative Keith Ellison is one of those “breakthrough” figures: the first Muslim to be elected to the U.S. Congress— that was in 2006--and the first African American to be elected to the U.S. House from his state, Minnesota. You may be hearing a lot more of him soon. Backed by Bernie Sanders, he’s in the running to become chairman of the Democratic National Committee—which would make him the face of the liberal opposition to President Donald Trump. In this 2014 interview, he joins us to reflect on the odd questions he's been asked ('Does your wife wear a burqa?') and the way his faith intersects with his policy choices.

Marketing Shamanism January 26, 2017
Want to sell a book in the religion section? Add the word "shaman," and you'll do fine. Add the word "power" or "power animal" and you'll do even better. These days you can diet with the Shamanic Juice Fast, wear shaman-chic couture, join a Meetup group like "Tribe of Beltway Shamans," and spend $2,000 on a shamanic healing trip to the Amazon. Two experts from the South American shamanic tradition join us to explain what Shamanism is--and isn't--and why it's enjoying a cultural revival. From March 2014.

Morals and the Self-Righteous Mind
January 19, 2017
Democrat Barney Frank once said, 'we're not perfect, but they're nuts.' This week: Why it's so easy to dismiss people who think differently from us.
Why Good People are Divided by Politics and Religion January 19, 2017
If you’ve ever gotten into a moral argument with someone and thought your sparring partner just didn’t get it--well, you're probably right. The problem is, you probably didn’t get it, either. Now that political polarization has reached new, soaring heights, it's pretty clear that we need to get along with each other, like it or not. So we decided to step back and re-air our 2013 story that asks why it's so easy to look down on people who think differently from us.

The Copts: Nurturing Jesus in the Deserts of Egypt January 19, 2017
For Coptic Christians, the story of Christianity is rooted in Egypt--where the young Jesus was nurtured and protected from the tyrant ruler King Herod. They’ve lived there since biblical times, often dwelling in the dusty caverns of the desert. Originally aired in 2013.

The Handwritten Bible January 19, 2017
Seven years after he first got the idea, Phillip Patterson finally completed a seemingly impossible task: to hand-copy the entire Christian Bible. He wrote in cursive for four years, sometimes for 14 hours a day, enduring the death of his partner and an ongoing struggle with AIDS. On May 11th, 2013, he finished, copying the last two verses of the Book of Revelation. His favorite passage in the entire Bible? "Love thy neighbor as thyself." Originally aired in 2013.

Remembering MLK
January 13, 2017
Soon, Barack Obama hands over the White House keys to Donald Trump in our divided United States of America. We ask a pastor, what would Martin Luther King say?
Move On Up a Little Higher: A Tour of the African American History Museum January 13, 2017
Just a stone’s throw from where Martin Luther King Jr. gave his "I Have a Dream" speech, there's a new landmark - one that people are lining up around the block to see. It’s the National Museum of African American History and Culture. About 10 percent of its nearly 3,000 artifacts are related to religion, so we sent our producers Ruth Morris and Abigail  Holtzman to have a look.

"Precious, Go Tell Our Story" January 13, 2017
Amirah Muhammad’s grandfather was a leader of the Nation of Islam, Elijah Muhammad. But to Amirah, he was just her grandfather. For years she held onto a necklace that he had given to her grandmother, Clara. She shares her memories of them, and walks us through the difficult decision to give up this family heirloom that meant so much. Produced by Abigail Holtzman.

Rev. Dennis Wiley, Taking Rev. King's Message Further January 13, 2017
Rev. Dennis Wiley's connection to Martin Luther King runs deep; he fought to make Martin Luther King’s birthday a national holiday in the early 80s, and he marched in the very first parade honoring Rev. King. As racial tensions worsen and the nation's first black president hands over the White House to Donald Trump, we asked him--What would Rev. King say today?

Rev. Dennis Wiley, pastor at Covenant Baptist United Church of Christ
Beyonce Takes Us to Church January 13, 2017
We’re ending our tribute to King with a nod to the Queen…you know, Beyonce? Her 2016 album, Lemonade, has been called “fiery, insurgent and fiercely proud.” But for Yolanda Pierce, it's more than that. For her, it reminds black women that even if their own religious traditions fail to “see” them, they are still reflected in the divine.

How to Be a Diplomat
January 07, 2017
How to be a diplomat-- changing hearts and minds on the world stage, or in a small Midwestern town named after a Muslim military hero.
Changing the World...From the 'Cheap Seats' January 06, 2017
We kick off our diplomacy show at the biggest diplomatic body in the world, the United Nations. You might not know that it’s home to some 400 groups with an agenda based on faith. Two of these groups' representatives include Daniel Perell, a Baha'i, and Sally Dunne, a Catholic. To understand their role, they tell us, picture this scene: on a stage, where everyone can see, there's a big, round table with world leaders sitting around it. Way up in the rafters--the "cheap seats" as Dunne likes to say--are the priests, the rabbis, and other people of faith, watching and listening. They call it the "ministry of presence."

Meet Frederique and Brian, Iowa's Reluctant Cultural Ambassadors January 06, 2017
Welcome to Elkader, Iowa, population: 1,273. It's surrounded by corn and soybean fields and looks like a lot of towns in the Midwest. But it's the only one named after an Arab Muslim—a bearded military hero in a white shall, Emir Abd el Qader. The town has Anglicized his name a bit; they call themselves Elkader. Despite the homage to a hero of Islam, few residents have ever met a Muslim. So Frederique and Brian, owners of Schera's Algerian Restaurant on Main Street, have become the town's default cultural ambassadors.

Andrea Wenzel reported this story, which first aired on PRI's The World in 2012.

Religious Freedom Ambassador David Saperstein January 07, 2017
Rabbi Saperstein was appointed by President Obama as America's Ambassador for International Religious Freedom--the first non-Christian in that role. In his final days in office, he joins us in the studio to talk about why people around the world are routinely harassed and killed because of their faith, and to reflect on what first drew him to the role. “Jews have been the quintessential victims of religious persecution in the world,” he tells us. “And we know what evil can be done when good people stand by and watch the innocent being victimized.”

Rabbi David Saperstein, Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom under President Obama
